Abstract

This article examines the Mitoni tradition as an expression of the social values of the Qur’an within the context of Javanese culture, referring to QS. al-Mā’idah [5]: 2. The study aims to analyze the actualization of the values of ta‘āwun (mutual assistance), social solidarity, and collective responsibility in the local practices of Javanese society. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, analyzing classical and contemporary tafsir sources, works of cultural anthropology, and relevant scholarly studies. The data are analyzed using a thematic tafsir (maudhu‘i) approach and socio-cultural analysis to explore the relationship between Qur’anic texts and local cultural practices. The findings indicate that the Mitoni tradition functions not only as a cultural ritual but also as a representation of Qur’anic social values, particularly the principle of cooperation in righteousness and piety. The involvement of family and community in collective prayers and sharing practices reflects the internalization of the values of al-birr and ta‘āwun in social life. This study concludes that local traditions, as long as they do not contradict the principle of tawhid, can serve as effective mediums for the actualization of Qur’anic values and contribute to the development of socio-cultural Qur’anic interpretation in the Indonesian context.
