Marriage in Islam is a sacred institution aimed at preserving honor, lineage, and social stability. One form of marriage known in early Islamic history is nikah mut’ah, a temporary marriage contract that was initially permitted under certain conditions but later became a subject of scholarly debate. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of the verses related to nikah mut’ah according to Wahbah az-Zuhaili in Tafsir al-Munir, as well as to examine the differences between Sunni and Shi‘a perspectives. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach, using Wahbah az-Zuhaili’s work as the primary source. The findings indicate that Wahbah az-Zuhaili does not interpret Qur’an Surah an-Nisa verse 24 as a justification for nikah mut’ah, but rather as referring to a valid marriage that fulfills the required pillars and conditions. He asserts that nikah mut’ah has been permanently prohibited based on Prophetic traditions and the consensus of the majority of Sunni scholars. Thus, Wahbah az-Zuhaili’s interpretation reinforces the Sunni majority view and reflects a contemporary exegetical approach that upholds the fundamental principles of Islamic law.
