Muhammad Arkoun is recognized as a key contemporary Muslim thinker who significantly contributed to the formulation of Qur’anic interpretation methodology. He introduced a critical and innovative approach by integrating various modern disciplines such as linguistics, anthropology, and history into the interpretative process. Arkoun challenged narrow literal and textual readings, emphasizing the need to understand the Qur’an as a dynamic discourse shaped by specific social and historical contexts. His method marks a shift toward a more contextual and relevant interpretation aligned with the complexities of the modern era. Arkoun's contributions signaled a departure from traditional exegesis methods like tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr toward a more interdisciplinary and inclusive framework. His thought opened new avenues in Qur’anic studies, encouraging critical, reflective, and cross-disciplinary dialogue. He also inspired the development of interpretations that are not merely normative, but also analytical and responsive to social realities. This article aims to explore Arkoun’s interpretive method and assess its relevance within the landscape of contemporary Qur’anic scholarship.
